Founding Director
Brian Boigon

Brian Boigon is a Design Theorist, Artist,
Art Director, Writer, Researcher
& Associate Professor, Teaching Stream,
Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape,
& Design, University of Toronto.

His current research is in the hybrid field
of Science Fiction, Locomotive (movement)
Design and Quantum Physics.
Trained as an Architect, Boigon has been involved
with spatial productions since 1994 when he
launched the first tween-based virtual avatar
town called Spillville (see WIRED
https://www.wired.com/1994/12/boigon/).
His current research is focused on the invention
of a quantum science fiction portal called
The Interopera.

He is author of several books including:
The Interopera Reader, We Have Impact and
Speed Reading Tokyo.
Boigon's work is in numerous collections and
at the CCA (Canadian Centre for Architecture)
archives. Boigon is currently working on his next
iteration of The Interopera while teaching and
directing the Inner Outer Space Lab at
the University of Toronto.

Elizabeth Diller

Elizabeth Diller is a founding partner of Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R). She is currently leading the design of two cultural works, significant to New York: The Shed—the first multi-arts centre designed to commission, produce, and present all types of performing arts, visual arts, and popular culture - and the expansion of MoMA (both opening through 2019). April 20, 2018 - Elizabeth Diller was the only architect named on Time Magazine's list of 100 most influential people of 2018. Elizabeth is a Professor of Architecture at Princeton University.

Barbara Imhof

Barbara Imhof is a Vienna-based internationally renowned space architect, design researcher and educator. Her projects deal with spaceflight parameters such as with living with limited resources, minimal and transformable spaces, resource-conserving systems; all aspects imperative to sustainability. She is the co-founder and co-managing director of LIQUIFER Systems Group (LSG), an interdisciplinary team comprising engineers, architects, designers and scientists.

Sanford Kwinter

Dr. Sanford Kwinter is professor of ‘Science and Design’ at the Pratt Institute in New York, and Honorary Professor of Theory at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Kwinter co-directed the Masters in Design Studies Programs at Harvard University 2007-2014 where he oversaw the foundation of the ‘Art, Design, and the Public Domain’ program. He was a founding editor of Zone Books. Kwinter writes widely on topics of science, philosophy and aesthetics and continues to teach nationally and internationally at schools such as SciArc, the Staedelschule, and the Saas Fee Graduate School
of Art.

Kate Van Bakel

Kate Van Bakel is a M.Arch graduate from the University of Toronto, currently working within the Faculty as a Research Associate and Sessional Instructional Assistant with Brian Boigon. Kate is working on a number of artistic pursuits which engage ordinary and nonordinary reality. With an interest in design projects at a variety of scales, including comprehensive architectural projects, small batch furniture, product design, and continues to explore her own areas of research at the Lab that involve the relationship between analog and digital structural qualities, and machine oriented architecture.

Harry Ruda

Dr. Harry Ruda is a Professor, University of Toronto was one of the founders of a Canadian National Centre of Excellence in Photonics. He has served on the National Science and Engineering Council of Canada and on other government panels including those of the DOE, EPA and NSF in the US, and the RAE and EPSRC in the UK. He serves on the international advisory board of the National University of Science and Technology in Moscow and is currently Editor in Chief of IET Circuits Devices
and Systems.
